Field Study is a group of four mixed-media works on archival cold-press watercolor paper by Toronto artist Murray Duncan, each measuring 18 × 24 inches. Part of his ongoing Untitled AP Series, these pieces form a cohesive visual and conceptual suite exploring movement, structure, and the layered nature of memory. Through graphite, acrylic, and ink, Duncan constructs shifting fields of texture and line—mark-making that suggests architectural diagrams, mapping, or the residue of observed spaces. The cold-press surface amplifies the tactility of the media, allowing washes and dry strokes to settle into the grain while finer linework floats above. Repeating motifs—elliptical forms, scored grids, and gestural arcs—create rhythm and continuity across the four works. The monochromatic palette heightens the graphic impact and reinforces the series' emphasis on form, gesture, and spatial tension. While each piece stands independently, together they create a unified narrative of movement and contemplation, making Field Study ideal for installation as a set in residential, commercial, or gallery environments.
